My husband and I are getting ready to list and sell our home. We have been here for 6 years and I cannot believe how involved it is. It seems so simple - sell the house, pack up your things, hire a mover or rent a truck and move it over to the new home. Well, I am here to tell you that it is not that easy. We started going through items and packing over a month ago and we are not even half way through the process. We do not realize how many items we accumulate and shove into closets until we are forced to take a close look at them. Moving trucks and companies are busy and need to be scheduled months in advance. You have to plan on what will fit in your new home - especially if you are downsizing. Will what you have match the decor of the new home? Should you rent a storage unit to declutter while you are on the market? How are you going to list your home? Will you try and sell it FSBO, use a Flat Fee Realtor or a traditional model? How much equity will you have after all of the costs are paid out? I have found that a checklist has been my saving grace and keeps me from going insane and feeling overwhelmed about all of the things that still need to be done.
